The Roots of Addiction

What Causes Drug Addiction?

There is no one underlying cause of drug addiction. Addiction itself is a complex and progressive disease, and each person develops addiction in unique ways. One cause of addiction is genetics and a family history of substance abuse. Other factors that can lead to the development of drug addiction are based on one’s environment. These can include having family members who actively use substances, peer pressure, poor socioeconomic background, unresolved past trauma, and a history of abuse and neglect to name a few.

It is important to note the presence of these factors does not mean that someone will be an addict. However, these factors do make people more vulnerable to developing a substance abuse issue. If you or a loved one are in the grips of drug addiction, you need to seek the professional services of a New Jersey rehab as soon as possible.

The Symptoms of Addiction

What Are the Signs of Drug Addiction?

The signs of drug addiction can vary depending on the substance. However, there are tell-tale signs people exhibit that are red flags of substance abuse. For example, the common physical signs of addiction include bloodshot eyes, sudden and drastic changes in weight, an unkempt appearance, and a decline in personal hygiene. The common behavioral signs to watch for are the sudden change in friends, being secretive or suspicious in their behavior, and a drop-off in school and work performance.

Additionally, people who abuse drugs will display wide and unexpected mood swings. They will also become defensive and even combative if confronted about their substance use. Also, addicts may act anxious, fearful, and paranoid for seemingly no reason. When you see any of these signs, seek help from a New Jersey rehab like Liberty Wellness.

Key Principles of Effective Substance Abuse Treatment

The following key principles should form the basis of any effective substance abuse treatment program:

  • Addiction is a complex but treatable disease that affects brain function and behavior
  • There is no single treatment that is right for everyone
  • Individuals need to have quick access to treatments
  • Treatment should address other possible mental disorders
  • Effective treatments address all of the clients needs, not just his or her drug abuse
  • Treatment must be reviewed often and modified to fit the clients changing needs
  • Drug use during treatment should be monitored continuously

We offer a variety of substance abuse treatments and therapies that are tailored towards our clients goals and needs. Our treatment includes both medical and mental health services as needed.

Types of Substance Abuse Treatments

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that has been demonstrated to be effective in helping to treat anxiety, depression, drug and alcohol addiction, eating disorders, and more. CBT takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. It’s goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people’s difficulties, and to change the way they feel. Various research studies have shown that CBT leads to significant improvements in quality of life.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) for people struggling with substance abuse problems, is a way to achieve self-acceptance while simultaneously accepting the need for change. There are four basic aspects to DBT: mindfulness, interpersonal relations, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance.

Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) teaches family and friends effective strategies for helping their loved one throughout the treatment process. CRAFT works to affect the loved one’s behavior by changing the way the family interacts with him or her. CRAFT is designed to target three goals:

  • When a loved one is suffering from addiction and refusing to get help, CRAFT helps move their loved ones towards treatment
  • CRAFT helps reduce the individuals drug or alcohol abuse
  • CRAFT helps improve the lives of the concerned family or friends

Seeking Safety – Seeking Safety is a present-focused therapy that helps clients attain safety from trauma (including PTSD) and substance abuse by emphasizing coping skills, grounding techniques and education. One of the main points of seeking safety is to teach clients to feel more safe in relationships, thinking, and action. It is relative to all types of trauma and helps you focus on your personal strengths and better them.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative and goal-oriented treatment practice for strengthening motivation and commitment to a particular goal (recovery). MI pulls from various therapeutic styles and theories such as humanistic therapy, cognitive dissonance theory, therapeutic relationship building, stages of change models, and positive psychology. Together, the client and therapist use reasons for change directed by the patient to address ambivalence and turn the desired goal into reality.
