What Is An Outpatient Program?
An Outpatient Program (OP) is a kind of treatment service and support program used to address addictions, depression, eating disorders, or other dependencies that do not require detoxification. With an OP program, you won’t live at an addiction treatment facility. You are able to live at home and continue your regular day-to-day obligations such as work, school, or taking care of your family.
Outpatient is a program for any client that has completed the Intensive Outpatient Program. OP continues to provide support and structure to the client and their loved ones, while acclimating to the community.
Outpatient Rehab Programs Include:
- Individual Therapy
- Group Therapy
- Family Counseling
- Trauma Therapy
- Community Integration Support
- Psychological Evaluations
- Medical Evaluation
- Meditation
- Grief and Loss
- Life Skills
- Codependency
- Nutrition and Dietary Education
- Relapse Prevention
- Anger Management
- Conflict Resolution
- Employment Skills
What’s the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Programs?
While both of these programs equally focus on rehabilitation, each type has different attributes to offer. Inpatient programs require the individual to be closely monitored while living at the rehab facility. These programs are generally for individuals with more severe addiction problems. Outpatient programs let the individual still live at home while undergoing treatment. It allows more flexibility and for the client to resume normal daily activities.
Is Outpatient Rehab Right for Me?
It is important to find the best addiction treatment program that meets you and your family’s needs. Outpatient might be the right solution for you if:
- You are in the early stages of addiction and less at risk for relapse if you go back home.
- You have work or family obligations that prohibit you from staying at an inpatient facility.
- You are looking for a less expensive treatment option.
- You need additional support to avoid or recover from relapse.
- You do not need 24/7 supervision, medical or clinical help.
Types of Outpatient Rehab Programs
There are different types of outpatient rehab programs based on the type of substance abuse or the individual’s severity of addiction and how they’re recovering. There are generally three different categories for outpatient rehab, including:
Day Programs: Day programs consist of meeting 5-7 days per week at an outpatient facility for multiple hours a day. During their meetings, clients will participate in ongoing therapy, group counseling, meditation, etc. Clients are able to return home after each session.
Intensive Outpatient Program: Intensive outpatient programs establish a treatment plan with measurable milestones put in place to see if the client is making progress. Once these milestones are met, the time commitment required per week will decrease. An IOP is ideal for people who are serious about abstaining from drugs or alcohol but still need the flexibility to work and obtain normal daily responsibilities.
Continuing Care: Continuing care groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous are ongoing support resources to help the individual remain committed to their sobriety. These groups are usually run by a licensed therapist and meet weekly.
Questions to Ask When Choosing an Outpatient Program
The National Institute on Drug Abuse offers some tips for choosing an OP program that is right for your needs. Here are some questions to ask when deciding on treatment:
- Is the treatment easily accessible? Do they offer transportation services?
- Does the program specialize in co-occurring disorders?
- Does the OP program provide personalized care tailored to the patient?
- Does the program include medical treatment?
- Does the program offer social support, including group therapy, family therapy, and intervention services?
- Is the treatment ongoing? Will the program last long enough to ensure the best chance of addiction recovery?
- Does the OP program accept my insurance?
