New Jersey Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

If you or a loved one are seeking addiction treatment, finding the right treatment program for your needs is a challenge. Like many people seeking treatment, you have heard that residential treatment is the “gold standard” of drug treatment programs. While the intensive outpatient program, services, and care in residential facilities give you an excellent chance at finding long-term recovery, it may not work for you.

What if you can’t commit to significant time away from work or family? What if you can’t afford a residential treatment program? If residential treatment isn’t right for you, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) may be a more viable solution. Call Liberty Wellness toll-free today if you have questions about our intensive outpatient program in New Jersey and wonder if an IOP is suitable for you.

Introduction to Addiction and Outpatient Treatment

Our top-tier counseling staff looks beyond the substance, addressing the addiction along with underlying issues. We pride ourselves on helping each and every individual develop healthy coping skills that promote success with reintegration back into the community. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offered at our Berlin, NJ rehab facility allows our patients to receive personalized, intensive therapy and rehabilitation while living at home and readjusting to their normal life.

Addiction is a progressive and debilitating disease that affects people from all walks of life. For those addicted to drugs, the cravings and use of substances slowly takes over their lives and the lives of those they love. Addiction creates dysfunction, and it often tears people apart, and the damage can be irreparable. For those struggling with substance abuse, finding the right professional help and support gives them the tools and support they need to address and overcome substance abuse. Treatment facilities offer several levels of care to suit each client’s needs, including outpatient treatment.

New Jersey outpatient treatment programs offer the same evidence-based services found in a residential program but allow people to live at home to uphold their family and work obligations. Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are ideal for those who can’t spend extended time away from family, work, or school in order to get treatment services. With outpatient programs, people attend meetings and get treatment services during the day, depending on the client’s schedule. Many outpatient programs are considered step-down programs because the frequency and amount of time spent in treatment sessions gradually decrease as people progress in their individual programs.

Usually, people will start attending outpatient treatment 3-4 days weekly and will spend approximately three hours per session. As stated, the frequency of treatment and the total time spent in each session gradually decline as people progress in their program. On average, people can spend between 3-8 months in an intensive outpatient program. Depending on the severity of one’s addiction, programs can be extended up to one year and even longer.

Inpatient vs. Outpatient: Which is Right for Me?

There is a lot to consider when choosing a drug treatment program. Drug rehab is a considerable investment of both time and money. While finding treatment as soon as possible is a top priority, you don’t want to enter a treatment program that won’t give you the tools and support you need to overcome your addiction. There is much to consider when choosing between inpatient and outpatient drug treatment. What treatment option is best for you?

You will reside at the treatment facility with inpatient drug treatment and receive around-the-clock support. Many inpatient programs include medical detox, individual and group therapy, life and coping skills training, holistic therapy options, and 12-step support, among other services. Many inpatient programs run for30 days, but many facilities offer 60-day, 90 days, and even longer programs. Inpatient treatment would be best for you if you meet the following criteria:

  • The severity of your addiction requires medical detoxification to gradually wean you off of substances.
  • You have underlying medical conditions which require around-the-clock support.
  • You don’t have a solid support system at home
  • You will succumb to the triggers and temptations present in your environment
  • You have a co-occurring mental illness along with a substance abuse issue (commonly known as dual diagnosis).
  • Need a highly structured environment and intensive programming to curb the risk of relapse.

As already discussed, outpatient programs feature similar services that are found in an inpatient program but allow people to live at home. People will attend programming at the facility and receive individual and group therapy, medication management (if needed), counseling, educational workshops, and 12-step group support. Outpatient treatment is a better option for you in these cases:

  • You may not require medical detox and don’t need around-the-clock medical support.
  • You have a strong support system of family and friends
  • Your addiction issues are comparatively mild

Additionally, outpatient programs are less expensive than inpatient programs, and most insurance policies cover a greater portion of treatment services. Also, there are different types of outpatient programs to choose from—including intensive outpatient programs (IOP).

What Are The Benefits of IOP Treatment?

Intensive Outpatient Programs are designed to offer the same intensity and focus of inpatient programs, while letting the client maintain their normal day-to-day life. They are beneficial for someone who may not be able to commit to an inpatient program because of their job, family, or other responsibilities.

Intensive Outpatient Treatment studies have shown to be just as effective as residential treatment for many people seeking help. For clients who do not require medical detoxification services, IOP would be a good alternative to residential programs.

Some of the main benefits of IOP programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Greater client responsibility
  • Lower prices compared to a residential or inpatient treatment program
  • Patients have the ability to maintain their daily activities and stay at home where they feel most comfortable
  • Increased duration of treatment has shown to lead to better recovery outcomes
  • Connecting with others that can relate to you
  • It helps you keep things private

Is Our New Jersey IOP Program Right For You?

IOP treatment is an important step in the recovery process. Inpatient care, such as being in a hospital, rehab, or other facility, can be challenging for some people. Although those treatments do provide a high level of care, they don’t always work best for people who have obligations and responsibilities. Many people find that they are better suited for a program that allows them to still live their normal lives while seeking help for themselves. If you are someone who is not able to put everything on hold, IOPs are often the best choice for you. You have the ability to undergo treatment while also being able to stay at home.

Ideal candidates for an Intensive Outpatient Program have a safe and healthy at home environment. This includes family members that are supportive and provide encouragement for the individual. Someone who lives with other addicts would typically be suggested to stay away from people who can trigger them or cause relapse.

Questions to Ask When Choosing an IOP Program

The National Institute on Drug Abuse offers some tips for choosing an IOP program that is right for your needs. Here are some questions to ask when deciding on treatment:

  • Is the treatment easily accessible? Do they offer transportation services?
  • Does the intensive outpatient program (IOP) provide personalized care tailored to the patient?
  • Does the program include medical treatment?
  • Does the program offer social support, including group therapy, family therapy, and intervention services?
  • Is the treatment ongoing? Will the program last long enough to ensure the best chance of addiction recovery?

Understanding Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in New Jersey

A New Jersey IOP can be seen as a hybrid of both residential and traditional outpatient treatment programs. In an intensive outpatient treatment program in New Jersey, people receive evidence-based and intensive therapy and programming found in a residential treatment program but can remain at home. People will generally attend treatment three times a week for 3 hours each session. The frequency and duration of sessions depend on their addiction severity. The typical length of an intensive outpatient program in New Jersey is about 6-8 weeks, but the program length can be extended depending on a client’s specific needs.

When compared to general outpatient rehab programs, you will spend more hours per week in an IOP program. On average, you will spend at least 9 hours a week receiving treatment in an IOP New Jersey, while in a general outpatient program, you may spend 3-6 hours per week. Also, intensive outpatient program in New Jersey is extremely versatile. People can transition to an IOP as an aftercare option after residential treatment, be used as a “bridge” program to a general outpatient program, or may serve to prepare people for inpatient treatment.
