Individuals who are considering getting help for their drug or alcohol addiction may wonder what a rehab facility is like. What goes on during a typical day in rehab?
What happens when you go to a rehab facility solely depends on how severe your addiction is. Not everyone is going to have the same experience, but here is an idea of what you can expect in an NJ outpatient rehab facility.
Screening & Assessment
Typically, individuals will have to fill out a pre-admission assessment which is then reviewed by a clinical director to ensure that the individual is eligible for treatment. This pre-admission assessment includes basic information, medical history, substance use and mental health history.
Once individuals are approved to attend a rehab facility, clients will undergo another assessment to determine if they have any co-occurring disorders that need attention as well as the substance use disorder. Individuals who have depression or anxiety will need different treatment than individuals who do not. The initial assessment can also identify any family struggles or health issues that might affect the treatment plan.
Outpatient Rehab
For intensive outpatient programs or outpatient programs, individuals have the option of attending the rehab facility for a few hours a day, Monday through Friday. Outpatient programs do not require the individual to stay at the rehab facility. This means that clients can resume their daily activities such as work or school while also getting the help they need. Intensive outpatient programs and outpatient programs last around 8-12 weeks depending on the individual’s needs.
Drug & Alcohol Detox
Detox is typically the starting point in the drug and alcohol rehab process. For most people, the detoxing process can take 4-7 days, but in some cases it could take longer. For certain drugs like benzodiazepines, detox requires extensive medical attention.
While we do not offer detox at Liberty Wellness, we refer out to a number of professional detox facilities.
Therapy Sessions
Throughout the time spent at a rehab center, the majority of it will be in therapy of some sort. Individual, group, family, and trauma therapies are provided to help individuals uncover the triggers that are causing them to abuse drugs or alcohol. Clients will have plenty of time to talk about their personal and family troubles that could be contributing to their addiction.
Group therapy will give everyone the opportunity to hear other peoples stories related to addiction and will create a positive support system for everyone involved. Family therapy will be able to help mend some of the broken relationships that have been the result of addiction. Including family members in the treatment plan can help address the conflict in a healthier way.
Wellness & Life Skills Groups
Individuals will have the opportunity to work on different aspects of wellness and life skills each week. It is important to keep your mind and body healthy while going through addiction treatment, as well as reducing stress as much as possible. Some examples of wellness activities and life skills could include:
- Preparing meals
- Sleep & hygiene
- Exercising activities
- Relaxation skills
- Time management
- Parenting
- Conflict resolution
- Self-worth & acceptance
- Resumes, budgeting, career development
Rehabilitation Rules
Rehab programs tend to have many rules in place to make sure everyone is comfortable and things run smoothly. Some common rules that you can expect include:
- No drugs, alcohol, or paraphernalia
- No inappropriate conduct with any other clients or staff
- No violence or threats
- Attendance at all therapy sessions and meetings
- Compliance with drug testing procedures
- Confidentiality during group therapy sessions or any therapy
